Mental Health Matters: Enough Supports Colgan High School's 3rd Annual Mental Health 5K

Updated: 2 days ago
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, Enough Adoption Foundation was proud to participate as a community partner in the 3rd Annual Mental Health Matters 5K, hosted by Colgan High School in Manassas, Virginia.
The event brought together students, families, educators, mental health professionals, advocates, and community organizations with a shared purpose: to raise awareness, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and remind our community that no one should have to navigate their mental health journey alone.
For Enough, supporting this event was especially meaningful. Mental health and emotional well-being are central to our mission of empowering adoptees and families. We recognize that access to education, compassionate conversations, and appropriate resources can make a difference in how individuals understand and navigate their experiences.

A School Initiative Making a Community Impact
What began three years ago as a shared commitment to student mental health has grown into an annual community event.
The initiative was started by Ms. Maddy. Moore, a school counselor at Colgan High School, who began implementing efforts to increase mental health awareness and reduce stigma. When an opportunity arose to host a community walk, Ms. LaToya Holmes, the school social worker, enthusiastically joined the effort.
Together, they helped transform their passion for supporting students' mental health and well-being into an event that extends beyond the classroom.
Over the past three years, the Mental Health Matters 5K has:
Reached nearly 400 individuals through the annual walk.
Collaborated with more than 25 community partners, in addition to Colgan High School clubs.
Created opportunities for students, families, and community members to access mental health education, resources, and wellness activities.
These numbers represent more than event participation. They reflect an ongoing commitment to creating conversations, building connections, and making mental health a priority within the community.
We recommend Ms. Moore, Ms. Holmes, Colgan High School, and everyone involved in sustaining this important initiative.
Why Mental Health Awareness Matters to Enough
At Enough Adoption Foundation, we believe that mental health support should be accessible, compassionate, and responsive to everyone’s lived experiences.
For adoptees, emotional well-being can involve additional layers of complexity. Questions surrounding identity, belonging, grief, loss, relationships, and biological family connections may arise at different stages of life.
Not every adoptee experiences these challenges in the same way, but every adoptee deserves access to support that recognizes and respects their individual journey.
This is why one of Enough's core focus areas is adoptee well-being.
We work to connect adoptees and families with education, resources, and supportive communities while advocating for greater awareness of adoption-competent mental health care.
Events like Colgan's Mental Health Matters 5K help normalize conversations about mental health and encourage individuals to seek information, ask questions, and connect with available resources.
These conversations are important for everyone, including young people who may not yet have the language to explain what they are experiencing. Mental health awareness is not just about recognizing when someone is struggling. It is also about creating environments where people feel safe enough to speak, ask for help, and be heard.

Stronger Together
For Enough, participating alongside other advocates and organizations reinforces something we strongly believe:
No single organization can meet every need, but together, we can make support more accessible.
As a growing nonprofit, Enough values opportunities to connect with organizations and professionals whose work intersects with our mission. These relationships help us learn, share resources, and identify ways to better support adoptees and families.
We extend our appreciation to Colgan High School, Ms. Moore, Ms. Holmes, the participating school clubs, community partners, volunteers, and families who helped make the third annual Mental Health Matters 5K possible.
What began as an effort by two school professionals has grown into a meaningful community initiative, reaching hundreds of individuals and bringing together community partners over three years.
That is the power of people who recognize a need and choose to do something about it.
Enough Adoption Foundation was honored to support this year's event, and we look forward to continuing to stand alongside the individuals and organizations working to improve mental health awareness and well-being throughout our communities.
Because mental health matters. Community matters. And everyone deserves to feel supported, heard, and empowered.
